The Decorated Dartfish (Nemateleotris decora) is a small, slender reef fish found across a wide sweep of the Indo-Pacific, from Mauritius out to Samoa and up toward the Ryukyu Islands. In the wild it favors deep outer reef slopes exposed to moderate or strong currents, hovering just above rubble, sand, and hard open substrate near the base of reef structures. It's almost always found in pairs, and pairs tend to be monogamous. A nice trait that makes keeping a bonded duo a rewarding option in the right setup. The body is creamy white transitioning into rich purples and pinks toward the rear, and that tall first dorsal spine is hard to miss. You'll often see the fish flicking it rhythmically, whether to stabilize itself in current or signal to nearby conspecifics. Toward others of its own kind it turns noticeably territorial, so housing multiple individuals needs to be approached carefully. When startled, it vanishes into a hole or crevice instantly. This is a fish that absolutely needs bolt holes to feel secure, and a tightly fitted lid is non-negotiable. It feeds on zooplankton in the wild, particularly copepods and small crustacean larvae, and adapts well to frozen and prepared carnivore foods in captivity. A calm, well-established reef or FOWLR tank with peaceful tankmates suits it best.
