Indigo Dartfish

The indigo dartfish (Ptereleotris heteroptera) is a slender, elegant fish from the Indo-Pacific, found across an enormous range stretching from the Red Sea and East Africa all the way to Hawaii and the Society Islands. In the wild, adults settle at the base of reefs, over rubble and sandy patches, where they establish a shared burrow. Typically tucked beneath a chunk of coral rubble or a flat rock slab. What makes this species genuinely interesting is its social life: adults are monogamous and almost always seen in bonded pairs, hovering side by side while picking zooplankton from the water column, rarely drifting more than a meter or two apart. Juveniles tell a completely different story, gathering in enormous shoals of hundreds of individuals before eventually pairing off as they mature. In the aquarium, the indigo dartfish carries that same calm, methodical energy. It spends much of its time mid-water or just above the substrate, and it appreciates having a burrow or cave to retreat to when spooked. A covered tank is strongly recommended, since dartfish are notorious jumpers. Despite that quirk, this species is considered approachable for newer marine keepers, with a long potential lifespan and a peaceful disposition that pairs well with other calm tankmates.
