A compact freshwater liverwort from Asia, Riccardia chamedryfolia is one of those plants that aquascapers reach for when they want fine-grained texture rather than bold foliage. It is technically a liverwort rather than a true moss, and up close the branching fronds do have a faintly coral-like structure that sets it apart from the more familiar mosses used in planted tanks. The coloration is a deep, saturated green that reads as very natural against stone and wood. In the aquarium it works best when tied or glued to hardscape, rocks and driftwood are classic choices, where it slowly forms dense, cushion-like patches. Growth is genuinely slow, so patience is needed, but that same slow pace means trimming is rarely a chore. It does ask for more attention than some beginner plants: good light and injected CO2 are important for steady, healthy growth, and without both it tends to stagnate or melt back. Placement in the foreground or mid-ground on hardscape elements suits it well, and it contributes that sense of age and naturalness that takes a scape from looking new to looking established. Intermediate-level keepers who already have a CO2 system running will find it a rewarding and distinctive addition.
