The Snowflake Blenny (Salarias ramosus) is a small, characterful fish from the shallow inshore reefs, rocky outcrops, and even estuaries of the Western Central Pacific, ranging from the Philippines down to northwestern Australia. Its white-spotted and mottled patterning gives it the look of something hand-painted, and like most blennies it has a habit of perching on rocks and rubble with its pectoral fins, watching the world go by in a way that gives it a surprisingly personable feel. One biological quirk worth knowing: this species is capable of facultative air-breathing, an unusual adaptation that reflects its comfort in very shallow, sometimes oxygen-variable environments. In the wild it tends to form small loose groups around reef rubble margins, though solitary individuals are equally common. In the aquarium, keep only one per tank unless you have significant space. They can be territorial with their own kind. They're generally peaceful toward other species and a reasonable choice for someone newer to saltwater keeping. As an omnivore with a strong grazing tendency, providing a tank with some natural algae growth is a plus, and they'll typically accept prepared foods as well. A hardy, engaging little fish that earns its keep in a community reef setup.
