The Ocellated Dragonet (Synchiropus ocellatus), also sold as the Marbled Dragonet, is a compact and delicately patterned fish that spends its life close to the substrate rather than out in open water. Its body is covered in a mosaic of muted browns, oranges, and creamy whites, with the namesake ocellated spots helping it blend into the reef rubble, algal turf, and sandy patches it calls home across a wide stretch of the Pacific. From Indonesia east to the Pitcairn Group, and from Japan down to Australia. In the wild it tends to turn up in sheltered rocky reef habitats, tidepools, and lagoon edges, often moving around in small, loose groups rather than staking out a strict territory. It hunts small invertebrates that live in and among the substrate, and replicating that diet in captivity is really the main challenge this species presents. A refugium producing copepods and amphipods, or consistent target feeding with suitable live and frozen foods, is what separates keepers who succeed with this fish from those who struggle. Temperamentally it is peaceful and gets along well with most reef tankmates, though males will bicker with each other given the chance. With the right feeding setup, it is a genuinely rewarding long-term resident.
