The Tiger Blenny (Ecsenius tigris) is one of those species that reminds you just how much of the reef world remains underexplored. Its known range is remarkably restricted. Currently documented only from Osprey, Bougainville, and Holmes Reefs in the western Coral Sea, making it a genuinely uncommon find in the hobby. Like other members of the Ecsenius genus, it's a small fish, topping out somewhere between an inch and two inches as an adult, with the bold patterning that gives it its common name. Ecsenius blennies as a group are personable little reef residents, typically spending their time perching on rockwork and grazing across surfaces for algae and small food items. Behavior you can expect from this species given its omnivorous diet. Reproduction follows the standard blenny playbook: eggs are laid on the substrate and secured with an adhesive pad, while the larvae spend their early life as part of the plankton before settling out. Because it's rarely collected and comes from fairly remote reefs, this isn't a beginner's fish. Not because it's especially demanding to keep, but because getting the care right for an uncommon species matters more when replacements aren't easy to find. A small, well-established reef tank suits it well.
