The yellowhead wrasse (Halichoeres garnoti) is one of those species that can genuinely confuse you the first time you see juveniles and adults side by side in the same tank. They look like entirely different fish. Juveniles wear a bold yellow body with a contrasting dark lateral stripe, while adults transition through intermediate phases before males develop the namesake yellow head paired with a deeper, more complex body coloration. This dramatic transformation is a hallmark of the Halichoeres genus and makes this wrasse particularly interesting to watch as it develops. Native to the Western Atlantic, including the Gulf of Mexico and surrounding reef systems, it lives among shallow coral and rocky reef environments where it actively forages for small invertebrates throughout the day. In the aquarium, the yellowhead wrasse is lively and always on the move, which makes it an entertaining addition to a suitably sized reef or fish-only setup. That said, like most wrasses it will make a meal of small ornamental shrimp, tiny snails, and other diminutive inverts, so choose tankmates accordingly. It is generally listed as intermediate in care, largely due to its need for good water quality and a diet that covers its carnivorous feeding habits. A sand bed is appreciated, as this species likes to dive in when startled or at lights-out.
