Agile Chromis
Chromis agilis
A reef-native schooling fish that brings natural movement to larger coral displays.

About
The agile chromis (Chromis agilis) is a small damselfish from the warm reefs of the Indian Ocean, ranging across a broad arc from Kenya and Mozambique on the African coast out to the Maldives, Seychelles, and the remote Chagos Archipelago. In the wild, it hovers in loose groups around branching corals, cave entrances, and ledge overhangs on clear lagoon and seaward reefs. Typically in calmer, leeward areas where current is gentler. Its coloration is subdued rather than flashy, leaning toward earthy tones that give it the alternate name rusty chromis, and it stays on the smaller side for a marine fish, rarely exceeding three inches. Behaviorally it follows the familiar chromis playbook: mostly peaceful, more comfortable in groups than alone, and inclined to occupy the middle and upper water column. Like others in the genus, it is an egg-layer that forms breeding pairs, with males taking on the job of guarding and aerating the clutch once eggs are deposited on the substrate. In the aquarium it appreciates a reef setup with plenty of rockwork and some open water to patrol. It is generally considered an intermediate-level fish rather than a true beginner species, and it tends to thrive best when kept in small groups rather than as a lone individual.
