Reef Chromis

Found across a wide sweep of the Western Pacific, from Indonesia east to Fiji, north to the Ryukyu Islands, and as far south as New Caledonia, this small damselfish, Chromis retrofasciata, is a creature of clear, coral-rich water. In the wild it keeps close to densely branching coral heads in lagoons and along seaward reef slopes, darting out to feed and retreating quickly when anything alarming passes by. It tends to appear alone or in loose small groups rather than the large shoals some other chromis form. At under two and a half inches fully grown, it stays genuinely compact, and that modest size combined with a relatively peaceful disposition makes it a reasonable choice for reef tanks as small as 30 gallons. Like other members of its genus, it's a daytime feeder that accepts a varied diet without much fuss, which helps explain why it's generally considered accessible for newer saltwater keepers. Breeding behavior follows a typical damselfish pattern. Pairs form, eggs are laid and attached to a hard surface, and the male takes on guarding and fanning duties until the eggs hatch. It's not the boldest fish in the tank, but its undemanding nature and reef-safe reputation give it solid practical appeal.
