Vanderbilt's Chromis (Chromis vanderbilti) is a compact, reef-associated damselfish spread across a surprisingly broad range of the Pacific, from Taiwan and the Izu Islands south through Micronesia and out to Hawaii and the Pitcairn group, with a foothold in the eastern Indian Ocean around Rowley Shoals. In the wild it gathers in small to large aggregations over exposed outer reef slopes and rocky nearshore reefs, spending its days picking zooplankton, particularly copepods, out of the water column. That shoaling instinct carries over well into aquarium life, and keeping a small group rather than a lone individual generally produces more natural, relaxed behavior. Like other chromis, Vanderbilt's is a reef-safe, relatively peaceful damselfish, which puts it in a different category from many of its more combative damsel relatives. It won't bother corals or most tankmates, making it a genuinely practical choice for community reef setups. Reproduction follows a pattern typical of the genus: pairs form at spawning time, eggs are laid on the substrate, and the male takes on guarding and fanning duties until they hatch. Care is accessible for beginner saltwater keepers, and the species adjusts well to aquarium feeding on a varied diet that includes frozen and prepared foods alongside anything resembling the plankton it naturally hunts.
