The angel squeaker (Synodontis angelicus) is one of the more visually distinctive catfish to come out of the Congo River basin, where it inhabits the waters of the Kasai and Ubangi drainages, Pool Malebo, and surrounding regions, though it is notably scarce in the wild. The base coloration ranges from pale grey to near-black, overlaid with spots that can be white, yellow, or occasionally broken into bars depending on where the fish originated. So two specimens from different localities can look surprisingly different from one another. This is a species that rewards patience: it is intensely nocturnal and will spend most daylight hours tucked out of sight, becoming active mainly after lights out. Younger fish tend to be more tolerant of tankmates, but as they mature they become increasingly possessive of the bottom of the tank, and adults will often refuse to share that space with other bottom-dwellers, including other Synodontis. Any fish small enough to fit in its mouth is at risk. Robust mid-water fish like alestiid tetras, West African cichlids, and larger barbs make better companions. Captive breeding is rare without hormone intervention. Given proper care, this species can live well beyond a decade, making it a genuine long-term commitment for an intermediate keeper.
