The yellow-tailed African characin (Alestopetersius caudalis) is a lively, shoaling species from the Congo River basin, found across a broad range that includes Lake Tumba, the Ubangi drainage, and the lower and middle Congo itself. Males develop extended central rays in the caudal fin as they mature, along with a narrow dark lateral stripe that broadens as it reaches the tail, and a vertically elongated spot near the shoulder. Females tend to be plainer, but the contrast between the sexes becomes most apparent when males compete, either for female attention or rank within the group, and display their richest coloration. These sparring sessions can involve several males simultaneously and make for genuinely engaging watching. Outside of those moments, this is a peaceful fish that fits well in a well-planned community alongside other Congo basin species, comparably-sized cichlids, catfishes, or loaches. That said, it is noticeably skittish and easily spooked by movement near the tank, so a calmer location helps. A group of at least eight to ten individuals, with a mix of sexes, is strongly recommended. Both for the fishes' confidence and for that natural schooling behavior to really show. Males in cramped conditions may scuffle and lose scales, leaving wounds prone to infection, so adequate space matters. Breeding occurs but is uncommon in the hobby.
