The Cape Lopez Lyretail (Aphyosemion australe) is one of the fish that put killifish on the map for aquarium hobbyists, and it's easy to see why it became such an entry point into the group. Males wear detailed patterns of red-brown spots and streaks over an orange or chocolate base, with the trademark extended lyre-shaped tail that gives the fish its name. Two color forms are widely available, chocolate and gold, and several ornamental variants like 'orange' and 'albino' also circulate in the hobby. In the wild it comes from coastal West and Central Africa, spanning Angola, Gabon, Cameroon, and Congo, where it lives in soft, shaded waters. Unlike many killifish, it is not a seasonal species, which partly explains its comparatively generous lifespan. It is a genuinely peaceful fish, but its shy nature means it can lose out at feeding time if kept with boisterous tankmates. Small characins, rasboras, Corydoras, and similarly calm species make far better companions than anything nippy or fast-moving. Males can be rough with each other, so watch dynamics if you keep more than one. For hobbyists curious about killifish breeding, this species is a rewarding place to start. Spawning is straightforward using egg-hanging methods, and the eggs and fry are manageable with a bit of attention to water quality.
