The red-spotted killi (Aphyosemion cognatum) is a small West African killifish that punches well above its weight in terms of color for the space it takes up. Native to the lower and middle Congo River basin, spanning parts of the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, this species lives in the shaded brooks, forest pools, and swampy backwaters tucked beneath the rainforest canopy. That wild habitat tells you a lot about what it prefers in captivity: soft, slightly acidic water with dim lighting and plenty of cover from plants or leaf litter. Unlike many killifish that dominate the hobby, Aphyosemion cognatum is not a seasonal species, meaning it doesn't follow the boom-and-bust annual lifecycle common to killis from temporary pools. That distinction makes it considerably more accessible, since you aren't racing against a biological clock to breed and preserve eggs. Males display rich red spotting on a greenish-yellow body, while females are more subdued, as is typical across the genus. This is genuinely one of the more forgiving killifish for someone new to the group, settling in well and holding its own without demanding the specialized attention that harder-to-keep relatives require.
