Mountain Barbel

The Mountain Barbel (Amphilius platychir) is a small-to-medium African catfish found across a broad sweep of West African river systems, from the upper Senegal and Gambia basins down through rivers like the Loffa and St. Paul. In the wild it occupies fast-flowing, well-oxygenated upland streams where it hugs rocky substrates and forages along the bottom. Two subspecies are recognized, though they look broadly similar. A slender, flattened body with a mottled brown and cream pattern that blends neatly into gravel and stone. That camouflage is genuinely good, so don't be surprised if you lose track of it in a decorated tank. In the aquarium it appreciates similar conditions to its natural habitat: strong filtration, good flow, and plenty of hiding spots among rocks or driftwood. It's an omnivore that will pick at most sinking foods without much fuss. Temperament is generally peaceful, making it compatible with other similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates. This isn't a fish for a bare, stagnant setup, but a hobbyist comfortable maintaining a well-filtered, current-driven aquarium will find it a rewarding and relatively undemanding resident. Not commonly seen in the trade, so when you do come across one, it's worth snapping up.
