The African butterfly cichlid (Anomalochromis thomasi) is one of those fish that often gets passed over at the shop because juveniles can look a bit washed out, which is a shame, because adults that have settled into a well-planted tank are genuinely lovely and surprisingly personable. Native to coastal river systems stretching from Guinea down to Liberia, this small cichlid inhabits shallow, often murky waters across both savannah and forest-edge habitats. In the dry season, temperatures can climb quite high in its home waters, and when threatened it will reportedly bury itself deep into soft substrate. A neat survival trick you won't see replicated often in the hobby. Despite the "aggressive" label that sometimes follows cichlids around, thomasi is one of the more peaceful members of the family, more inclined to retreat than to fight. Spawning season is the exception, when pairs become territorial and defensive, but in a thoughtfully stocked tank that's manageable. It does best kept as a small group alongside calm companions like small characins, Corydoras, or other African dwarf cichlids. Avoid boisterous tankmates that will stress it out. Breeding is genuinely accessible even for newer cichlid keepers: pairs form strong monogamous bonds, spawn on flat surfaces, and share parental duties with impressive coordination. It accepts a wide range of water chemistry, which makes it a forgiving introduction to West African cichlids.
