Found across a broad sweep of central and west-central African river systems, Bryconaethiops microstoma turns up in everything from the Congo basin to coastal drainages like the Ogowe, Nyong, and Kouilou, as well as the Malagarasi and the Nkomi lagoon. That wide natural range hints at a fish with some adaptability, though it still deserves thoughtful husbandry. Compared to its close relative B. macrops, this species is distinguished by more scales wrapping around the caudal peduncle and a noticeably smaller eye. Subtle differences that matter mainly to taxonomists, but worth knowing if you're trying to confirm what you actually have. In the aquarium, the more relevant trait is temperament: this is a confirmed fin-nipper, and that tendency gets worse if you keep too few of them. Running a proper school, think eight or more individuals, spreads out the bickering and produces much more natural, calmer behavior. At up to nearly seven inches when fully grown, they need real estate to move around in, so a spacious tank is non-negotiable. Tank mates should be robust enough to hold their own. Feed them a varied omnivore diet and they're not particularly demanding, but given their size and social needs, they sit squarely in intermediate territory rather than beginner fare.
