About

The Splendid Killifish (Aphyosemion splendopleure) is a small but richly colored non-annual killifish native to the coastal rainforest streams of southeastern Nigeria, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, and northwestern Gabon. In the wild it favors quiet, clear sections of brooks and minor waterways running over soft sedimentary substrates, staying close to the coast rather than venturing far inland. Males vary noticeably in color and patterning depending on the collection locality, and hobbyists are strongly advised against mixing different regional forms to avoid hybridization and preserve distinct bloodlines. This is not a fish for a general community setup. It is shy and struggles to hold its own around boisterous tankmates, so a species-only or carefully chosen single-species arrangement suits it far better. Males can be territorial with one another, though serious injury is uncommon. Despite the somewhat tricky temperament and the need for soft, slightly acidic water, breeding is considered approachable once the fish are well conditioned. Pairs or trios will deposit eggs on fine-leaved plants, spawning mops, or a peat substrate, and the eggs can be incubated separately using either water or a damp peat method. Fry are delicate and particularly vulnerable to velvet disease, so water quality in the raising tank needs close attention. This species is a rewarding project for a keeper willing to put in the effort.
