The Scaleless Killifish (Aphanius asquamatus) is one of the more unusual members of its genus, and genuinely unlike most fish you'll encounter in the hobby. Endemic to Lake Hazar in eastern Turkey, it's a relict species whose lineage traces back tens of millions of years to when a vast inland sea covered much of ancient Anatolia. What sets it apart physically is right there in the name. The body is almost entirely without scales, combined with a more elongated build than other Aphanius and a set of conical teeth unique within the group. These traits were so distinct that early taxonomists placed it in its own genus before later work confirmed it belongs with Aphanius after all. In the aquarium this is not a casual undertaking. Despite being listed as beginner-friendly in terms of basic husbandry, the species carries real conservation weight. It exists in a single location in the wild and is under pressure there. The recommended approach is to keep it as a dedicated breeding project, with a group skewed toward females. Males establish territories during spawning season but are generally less combative than related species. Outside of breeding periods the fish tend to school, and their constant activity makes them genuinely interesting to observe. Finding them will likely mean tracking down a specialist breeder or killifish association.
