Found in the remnant alkaline lakes of the Turkish Lakes region in central Anatolia, this little-known toothcarp, Aphanius transgrediens, is a fish you're far more likely to encounter through a specialist breeder or killifish association than in any aquarium shop. Its natural home, Lakes Tuz, Egirdir, and Beysehir, are survivors of an ancient inland sea that once covered much of modern Anatolia, and the species has spent millions of years adapting to waters with high levels of alkaline carbonates and sulfates. That long isolation has left some interesting marks: a slim, elongated body, a distinctively shaped jaw, and unusually variable scalation that's thought to reflect reduced selective pressure rather than fixed genetics. Males are relatively mild-mannered for the genus, and a group with more females than males tends to work well. Breeding is achievable with some effort. Eggs are deposited singly or in small batches and attached to surfaces by filaments, with adults prone to eating both eggs and fry, so daily checks are essential during spawning periods. If you do track this species down, treat it as a serious long-term commitment. Conservation of captive populations genuinely matters here, as wild populations are under real pressure from ongoing habitat degradation.
