Gabonese Killifish

Found in the slow, shaded waters of the lower Ogooué river basin in western Gabon, this small non-annual killifish, Aphyosemion gabunense gabunense, inhabits permanent bodies of water rather than the seasonal pools associated with many of its relatives. That distinction matters practically: it has a longer lifespan than annual killies and doesn't require the egg-drying techniques those species demand, making it a reasonable entry point into the killifish hobby. Adults stay compact, typically reaching around two inches, and males display the detailed patterning typical of Aphyosemion. Richly colored fins and body markings that reward a close look. Females are noticeably plainer, as is common in the genus. In terms of temperament, this is a genuinely peaceful and somewhat shy fish. It will lose out to boisterous or fast-moving tankmates and does best alongside calm companions such as small characins, rasboras, Corydoras, or similarly sized dwarf cichlids. A species-focused setup suits it particularly well. Breeding is achievable for intermediate keepers willing to do their homework. The fish will spawn on moss or mops, and eggs require careful incubation with close attention to light exclusion and water quality. Fry are tiny and slow-growing, so raising them successfully takes dedication, but the payoff is a small, characterful fish with real personality.
