Anatolian Toothcarp
Aphanius anatoliae
A hardy Anatolian toothcarp with a conservation story worth knowing.

About
Native to the ancient lake remnants of central Turkey, Aphanius anatoliae is the most widespread of the Anatolian toothcarps and the only fully-scaled member of its species complex. A detail that sets it apart from close relatives whose scalation varies unpredictably due to what may be regressive evolution under low selective pressure. These fish carry genuine biogeographic history: their isolated populations descend from a vast inland sea that once covered much of modern Anatolia, with divergence events stretching back over ten million years. In the aquarium, they are compact, constantly active fish that reward patient keepers. Their behavior is engaging, but that same energy extends to spawning, where males become territorial and competitive, making a species-only setup the strongly recommended approach. A ratio of two or three females per male helps distribute aggression. Breeding is achievable with proper planning. Females deposit eggs continuously through the warmer months, attaching them to algae or other surfaces, and the adults will eat eggs and fry if given the chance, so daily monitoring is important. These fish require well-oxygenated, clean water to thrive. They are rarely found in regular fish stores, but specialist breeders sometimes have them. Given how threatened wild populations are, keeping and breeding this species is a genuinely meaningful contribution.
