The African Red-eyed Tetra (Arnoldichthys spilopterus) is one of the more rewarding characins from the continent that doesn't get nearly enough attention in the hobby. Native to the lower Niger and Ogun river systems in Nigeria, it's a noticeably large-scaled fish compared to most of its relatives. A trait distinctive enough to earn it the alternate name 'large-scaled African characin'. The coloration is understated but genuinely appealing: iridescent flanks, bold scales, and those signature red eyes that give the fish its most common name. In the aquarium, this species is peaceful but carries plenty of energy, spending most of its time cruising the middle and upper water column. Because of that activity level, it's not the best tankmate for timid or easily-stressed species. It thrives alongside other West African fish. Fellow Alestiid tetras, smaller Synodontis catfish, and robust dwarf cichlids like Pelvicachromis pulcher make natural companions. Plan to keep at least ten individuals, as this is a true schooling species and does noticeably better in larger groups. Younger fish school tightly; older specimens tend to be a bit more independent. Hardy once acclimated, it can live a good many years with attentive care, making it a satisfying long-term resident for a species-appropriate community setup.
