The German Blue Ram (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi) is a small but richly colored dwarf cichlid native to the llanos of Venezuela and Colombia, where it inhabits the slow, warm, soft waters of the Orinoco River basin. Males typically develop more elaborate finnage and a deeper body coloration, with iridescent blue and gold tones across the flanks and a bold black patch on the side. Though the exact patterning varies between individuals and between the many captive strains now in circulation. In the aquarium, rams are generally peaceful and can be kept with other calm species, but they are genuinely shy fish and benefit from the presence of small schooling characids that signal all is well in the tank. They do have a territorial streak, particularly around spawning time, so some space to establish a patch of substrate is important. Where this species gets its intermediate care rating is water quality. Rams are sensitive and do not compete well in a rough-and-tumble community. Commercially produced fish, including the popular 'electric blue' and 'balloon' forms, are often less robust than wild or privately bred stock, so sourcing fish from a reputable breeder makes a real difference. Breeding is possible in the home aquarium but can be challenging, as egg quality and parental inexperience often factor in early attempts.
