Escherich's Killi (Aphyosemion striatum) is one of those species that tends to win people over the moment they look closely at a male. The flanks carry parallel red bands along the caudal peduncle, the dorsal fin shows two distinct horizontal red lines, and the tail is peppered with red spots rather than the concentric rings or bars you'd see on related species. Those markings are also useful for identification, helping separate it from close relatives like A. gabunense and A. primigenium. In the wild it inhabits swamps, small brooks, and shaded rainforest streams in Equatorial Guinea and northwestern Gabon, so it comes from soft, dimly lit, slow-moving water. Unlike many killies you'll encounter in the hobby, this one is not a seasonal species, which means it lives considerably longer than annual killifish and doesn't require the dry-storage egg incubation routine those fish demand. In a community tank it's gentle to the point of being easily pushed around, so choosing calm, similarly-sized tankmates matters. Tetras, Corydoras, dwarf cichlids, and small loricariids all work well. Breeding is straightforward, with eggs deposited into plants or substrate daily, and the whole process is manageable even for someone new to killifish. A solid first killi.
