The Black Spotted Catfish (Auchenoglanis biscutatus) is a large, peaceful bottom-dweller native to a sweeping stretch of African waterways, from the Senegal and Chad basins in the west all the way east through the Nile and into Lake Turkana. That wide natural range hints at an adaptable fish, and in the aquarium it proves reasonably forgiving for a catfish of its scale. In the wild it favors running water and open lake environments, rooting through mud and debris for chironomid larvae, mollusks, and whatever organic matter comes its way, so expect it to rearrange substrate and forage constantly in your tank. Despite the size it can reach, its temperament is genuinely sociable and calm, making it compatible with other large, non-aggressive tankmates. The species is elongated and moderately flattened along the belly, built for hugging the bottom, with a pattern of darker spots that gives it its common name. Because adults can grow very large, the space commitment here is serious and should be the first thing any prospective keeper weighs up. Given the right setup, though, this is a long-lived fish with a straightforward diet and an easy-going personality that rewards patient, well-prepared keepers.
