Found at elevations above 2,300 meters in the Zagros Mountains of Iran, Aphanius vladykovi is a small toothcarp from the upper Karun River basin. A habitat of shallow, cloudy water over mud and pebbles, thick with pondweed and milfoil. This is not a fish you are likely to spot at your local fish store; specialist breeders and aquarium societies are your best bet for sourcing it. Part of a remarkable group of ancient Iranian toothcarps that diverged from a common ancestor roughly 20 to 24 million years ago, vladykovi is most closely related to A. sophiae but males of this species carry a distinctive dark dorsal fin that their cousins lack, and females do not have the lozenge-shaped caudal spot seen on female sophiae. In the wild it forms large schools, and a group in the aquarium, ideally with more females than males, shows the same restless, continuous movement that makes the genus so watchable. Spawning behaviour is vigorous enough that housing it with other species is not a great idea; a dedicated tank keeps stress down and supports captive breeding, which matters because wild populations across the genus are under serious pressure from habitat loss. For a keeper willing to commit to a species-focused setup, this is a genuinely rewarding long-term project.
