Azure Damselfish

The Azure Damselfish (Chrysiptera hemicyanea) is a compact, two-toned reef fish that's hard to overlook. The front two-thirds of the body carries a vivid cobalt blue, while the belly and rear half shift into a warm yellow-orange. A clean division that makes identification straightforward. In the wild, this species is found across the eastern Indian Ocean and Indonesian reefs, living among branching Acropora corals in lagoons and near-shore reef environments. They tend to hover in small groups just above the coral branches, picking plankton from the water column a few inches above the reef structure. Like most damsels, they're diurnal and active during the day. Breeding behavior is worth knowing: pairs form during spawning, the female deposits adhesive eggs directly onto the substrate, and the male takes on guarding and aerating duty until they hatch. In an aquarium setting, the Azure Damselfish is widely considered a solid choice for newer marine keepers. It's hardy, adapts well to aquarium life, and accepts a variety of foods readily. The catch, as with most damsels, is temperament. It can be territorial, especially in smaller tanks or when kept with similarly sized fish, so tankmate selection deserves some thought before adding one.
