The Beau Gregory (Stegastes leucostictus) is a small damselfish from the Western Atlantic, ranging from southern Florida and Bermuda down through the Gulf of Mexico and all the way to Brazil. In the wild it turns up across a surprisingly broad range of habitats, seagrass beds, rocky reefs, sandy flats, mangrove edges, and sponge beds, always staying close to the bottom, rarely venturing more than half a foot off the substrate. That bottom-hugging lifestyle translates well to aquarium keeping. Juveniles are particularly attractive, showing bright blue spotting against a yellowish body, while adults tend toward a more muted but still appealing coloration with a pale to yellow belly. The origin of one of its nicknames. One of the more interesting behaviors this species brings to a tank is algae farming: like other members of its genus, it will actively tend and defend a patch of algae growth on a hard surface, which gives it a sense of purpose and territory even in a community setting. Despite that territorial tendency, it is generally considered one of the more docile damselfishes, making it a workable option for reef-adjacent setups. Males guard egg clutches and fan them with their fins, so breeding behavior is occasionally observed in home aquaria. A good choice for a hobbyist getting into saltwater keeping.
