Ricordea (Ricordea florida), often called the Florida corallimorph or Florida false coral, is a soft cnidarian from the Western Atlantic that looks far more exotic than its care requirements might suggest. Rather than building a hard skeleton like true corals, it produces a fleshy, disc-shaped polyp covered in bubble-tipped tentacles that give it an almost cartoon-like texture. It comes in an impressive range of colors, greens, oranges, purples, blues, and mixes of all of these, making each specimen feel a little unique. In the wild it's found in tropical reef-associated environments throughout the Caribbean, typically in areas of gentler water movement. In the aquarium, low flow is genuinely important: too much current and the polyp will simply detach and relocate itself, which is its way of telling you something is wrong. Lighting is where you'll need to pay the most attention. Different individuals, especially across color varieties, can have fairly different preferences, so if a polyp starts shriveling consistently it's worth experimenting with placement before assuming something else is off. Most specimens settle in happily under moderate light. Ricordea florida is a genuinely forgiving choice for reef keepers who are just getting started with corals and want something visually rewarding without a steep learning curve.
