Turbo Snail

The turbo snail (Turbo fluctuosa) is one of the workhorses of the saltwater cleanup crew, spending virtually every waking hour moving across glass, rock, and substrate in search of algae. Native to the Gulf of Mexico, this snail is a solid choice for newer reef and fish-only keepers who want a low-fuss but genuinely useful addition to their tank. Its shell is a sturdy, rounded cone with a rough, matte exterior that tends to blend into the rockwork. Nothing flashy, but built for purpose. The foot underneath is large and muscular, which is exactly what makes it such an effective grazer across almost any surface. The one care point worth knowing before you add these to your tank: if a turbo snail gets knocked off a rock or tumbles onto its back, it cannot flip itself upright again. Left unattended in that position, it will die. A quick daily scan of the tank floor takes only seconds, and rescuing an upturned snail is as simple as setting it back on a hard surface. Beyond that, turbo snails are genuinely undemanding and reward a bit of basic attention with consistently clean glass and well-grazed rockwork.
