Flame Box Crab

The flame box crab (Calappa flammea) is a saltwater species, not freshwater as sometimes mislabeled, native to the Western Atlantic, ranging through the Gulf of Mexico and down into the Lesser Antilles. It belongs to a group known informally as shame-faced crabs, named for the way the claws fold up in front of the face like a pair of raised hands. Those claws are more than decorative: one is distinctly modified with a tooth-like projection purpose-built for prying open and cracking the shells of snails and other mollusks, which form a significant part of its diet in the wild. The carapace is broadly domed and smoothly rounded, with bold orange and red patterning on a cream background that makes it genuinely unlike most crabs you'll come across in the hobby. In the aquarium, this species spends a lot of its time buried in a sandy substrate with only its eyes and antennae visible, so deep, soft sand is pretty much non-negotiable. It will eat snails and smaller invertebrates without hesitation, so tankmate selection needs careful thought. Overall it sits comfortably at an intermediate care level. Rewarding for a keeper who understands its burrowing habits and predatory tendencies.
