The sergeant major (Abudefduf saxatilis) is one of the most recognizable fish on Atlantic and Caribbean reefs, wearing a pattern of bold vertical black bars against a yellow-green and white body that makes identification straightforward even for beginners. Juveniles start life in tide pools and nearshore shallows, where they sometimes set up cleaning stations alongside surgeonfish, picking parasites and dead skin from sea turtles. A fascinating behavior not often associated with damsels. As they mature, adults move onto shallow reef tops and can gather in enormous feeding aggregations, sometimes numbering in the hundreds. That social side disappears quickly around nesting sites, where males become intensely territorial, chasing off anything that comes too close. Breeding males shift to a noticeably bluish coloration while guarding their adhesive egg clusters on hard substrate. In the aquarium this species is workable but demands respect. It gets larger than most people expect and the aggression ramps up considerably with age and size. This is not a community-friendly fish for a mixed reef setup. It does best when given space and tankmates that can hold their own. A curious and interactive fish that tends to notice and respond to activity outside the tank.
