The chain moray eel (Echidna catenata) is one of the more visually distinctive morays you'll encounter, patterned with a bold network of pale chain-like markings against a dark background that makes it instantly recognizable. Its range spans a broad stretch of the Atlantic, from Bermuda and Florida down through the Caribbean to Brazil, as well as scattered eastern Atlantic outposts including the Cape Verde Islands and Ascension Island. In the wild it haunts rocky shorelines and reef areas, living a largely solitary, bottom-oriented life. What sets this species apart from most other morays is its remarkable hunting behavior: individuals have been observed leaving the water entirely to pursue crabs across exposed reef rock, tolerating up to half an hour out of water during active foraging. It targets crustaceans and small fish using a mix of patient stalking, ambush, and outright pursuit, with a roughly even success rate. Smaller crabs get swallowed whole, while larger ones get wrestled apart using a combination of body-rolling and thrashing. Despite all this predatory drama, the chain moray is actually considered a manageable species for hobbyists with appropriately sized, secure setups. Like any moray, it needs a tight-fitting lid and tankmates large enough not to be considered a meal.
