Commerson's Sea Pike (Sphyraena barracuda) is one of the largest barracuda species on the planet, and its size alone makes it one of the most demanding fish anyone could attempt to keep in captivity. Found across an enormous range spanning the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa all the way to Hawaii, as well as throughout much of the Western Atlantic from Massachusetts down to Brazil, this species occupies a huge variety of wild habitats. Juveniles tend to shelter in mangroves, estuaries, and calm inner reef shallows, while adults roam everything from turbid harbors to open ocean, almost always near the surface. The body plan is the classic barracuda blueprint. Long, torpedo-shaped, silvery, with a prominent underslung jaw full of sharp teeth. In the wild, adults are typically solitary and hunt during daylight hours, targeting fish and cephalopods primarily. Despite the schooling note in the data, adults in aquarium settings often do best observed as solitary specimens. The care level listed as beginner seems optimistic given the sheer scale required. A fish that can exceed six feet and weigh over 100 pounds will outgrow nearly any private system quickly. Realistically this species belongs in large public aquarium displays rather than home setups.
