The dark-banded eel (Echidna polyzona) is one of those morays that regularly surprises people who assume all eels are indiscriminate predators. Across its wide natural range, spanning the Red Sea, East Africa, and out through the Indo-Pacific to Hawaii and the Tuamoto Islands, this species lives on reef flats, shallow lagoons, and seaward reefs, spending its time wedged into crevices and hunting the bottom for crustaceans rather than pursuing fish. That crustacean-focused diet is the key detail that shapes how you keep it: shrimp and crabs are squarely on the menu, but fish tankmates are far less likely to disappear than with many other moray species. Its banding pattern, alternating dark and pale rings wrapping the length of the body, makes identification straightforward and gives it a clean, bold look that holds up well in a display tank. Adults reach a respectable length, so a large system is necessary to house one properly. Despite its size, this eel is listed as a beginner-accessible species, partly because it is hardy and adapts well to aquarium life, and partly because its feeding preferences make community planning more manageable. Just remember that any ornamental crustaceans you add will likely become a meal.
