The Bosch' moray eel (Echidna nebulosa) is one of the more hobbyist-friendly morays you'll encounter, and that reputation comes down to its teeth. Unlike many eels built for catching slippery fish, this species has short, rounded, pebble-like teeth purpose-built for crushing hard-shelled prey. Crabs, shrimp, and similar crustaceans. That dentition makes it far less of a threat to fish tankmates than most eels its size, which is a meaningful advantage in a mixed reef or fish-only setup. In the wild it ranges across a huge swath of the Indo-West Pacific, from the Red Sea and East Africa all the way out to Hawaii and the Society Islands, typically tucking itself into crevices on shallow reef flats, lagoons, and seaward reefs. You'll usually spot it with just its head poking out from a cave or rock gap, which is exactly how it behaves in the aquarium too. It's a committed nocturnal predator, so don't be alarmed if it barely moves during the day. After lights out is when it becomes active. Despite being listed as beginner-appropriate for a moray, the sheer adult size demands a very large, well-covered system, as these eels are accomplished escape artists. Any crustaceans you value should not share the tank.
