The common lionfish (Pterois volitans) is one of the most recognizable fish in the saltwater hobby. Bold red, white, and brown banding broken up by an extraordinary spread of feathered pectoral fins and elongated dorsal spines that make it look like nothing else in the tank. Native to a vast stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from Western Australia and the Indian Ocean islands all the way to southern Japan and the Marquesas, it lives on lagoon and seaward reefs, tucking itself into crevices and overhangs during the day, often hovering head-down and almost completely still. Come nightfall it shifts into predator mode, using those wide pectoral fins to herd small fish, shrimp, and crabs into corners before engulfing them in a single swift strike. In the aquarium it tends to be a slow, deliberate presence. Perching on rockwork, wedging into caves, occasionally cruising around at its own unhurried pace. That calm temperament has a catch though: every one of those ornate dorsal spines delivers a genuinely painful venomous sting, so careful handling is non-negotiable. It grows into a large fish and is an ambush predator, meaning any tankmates small enough to swallow are at serious risk. This is a species that rewards a keeper who plans ahead and respects what it actually is.
