The banded lionfish (Pterois antennata) is one of the more ornate members of the scorpionfish family, dressed in alternating reddish-brown and white vertical bars with dramatically elongated dorsal spines that fan out like feathers. Those spines are venomous, and a sting is genuinely painful, so this is a fish that demands respect during tank maintenance. Long gloves are a smart investment. In the wild it ranges across a vast stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from East Africa all the way to the Marquesas Islands and north to southern Japan, where it inhabits lagoon and seaward reef environments. During daylight hours it tucks itself into crevices and beneath rocky ledges, usually positioned with its head facing toward the exit. A habit it brings right into captivity. After dark it shifts into hunting mode, stalking crustaceans like shrimp and crabs. In the aquarium it will generally transition to meaty frozen foods with some patience, though live ghost shrimp can help coax reluctant specimens to feed. This is a solitary fish by nature and tends to ignore tankmates it cannot eat, making it a workable choice for a predator reef setup as long as small crustaceans are kept out of the picture. Intermediate-level experience with marine systems is a reasonable baseline before taking one on.
