Lipspot Moray

The lipspot moray (Gymnothorax chilospilus) is a smaller member of the moray family, reaching somewhere between one and two feet in length as an adult. Modest by moray standards. It's found across a broad stretch of the Indo-Pacific, from the coasts of South Africa and Oman all the way out to Hawaii and the Society Islands, with its range extending north toward Japan and south to Australia. In the wild it sticks close to shallow reef flats, often in just a few feet of water, tucked into rubble and coral crevices where it hunts along the bottom. The common name references the distinctive pale markings around the lips, which help separate it from similar-looking species. Despite the "beginner" care rating, the 250-gallon minimum tank requirement means this fish is only practical for dedicated marine setups. It's not a species you can drop into a starter reef. Like all morays it's a committed carnivore and will make short work of smaller tankmates, so fish selection matters. That said, it tends to be less aggressive toward its keepers than many larger moray species, and given proper space, appropriate tankmates, and regular meaty feedings, it can be a long-lived and genuinely interesting centerpiece animal.
