Warty Frogfish

The clown anglerfish (Antennarius maculatus) is one of those animals that genuinely stops people in their tracks the first time they see one. Found across the Indo-West Pacific from the Maldives and Mauritius out to the Solomon Islands, this frogfish spends its life tucked among sponges, soft corals, and algae on sheltered rocky reefs, where its warty, highly variable coloration lets it disappear almost completely into the background. That modified first dorsal spine, the illicium, waves above its mouth like a tiny fishing rod, luring small fish close enough to be swallowed in a strike so fast it's nearly invisible to the naked eye. Juveniles are particularly remarkable, drifting openly on the reef while mimicking the appearance of nudibranchs to avoid predators. In the aquarium, this species is a dedicated carnivore that typically needs to be weaned from live food onto frozen or fresh alternatives, which takes patience and is part of why it suits intermediate keepers better than beginners. It's largely solitary and best kept alone or with fish too large to eat and peaceful enough to leave it alone. Given proper care and a well-established marine setup, it's a genuinely rewarding species to keep.
