The Yellow Devilfish (Assessor flavissimus) is a small, vividly gold-colored basslet native to the reef systems of the Great Barrier Reef and Papua New Guinea, where it congregates in caves, under ledges, and within crevices. Often hanging inverted from the ceiling as if gravity is optional. That upside-down swimming behavior is one of the most charming and unusual things you'll see from a fish this size, and it tends to stop visitors in their tracks when they spot it in a display tank. In the wild, these fish form loose aggregations in sheltered reef spaces, and they bring that same preference for hiding spots and overhangs into captivity. Provide plenty of cave-like structure and they'll make full use of it. Males carry the fertilized egg mass in their mouths during incubation, and spawning has been achieved in home aquariums, which is a nice bonus for dedicated keepers. On the temperament side, males can be territorial toward conspecifics or similar-looking fish, so tank mates and stocking order deserve some thought. This is a saltwater species despite the "freshwater" tag. It's firmly a reef and marine fish. Intermediate-level experience is a fair assessment, mostly due to managing its territorial tendencies rather than any particular sensitivity.
