The Mexican Barnacle Blenny (Acanthemblemaria macrospilus) is a tiny but characterful fish native to the eastern Pacific, ranging from the southern Baja California peninsula down through mainland Mexico to Acapulco, with populations also found around the remote Revillagigedo Islands. In the wild it lives on rocky reefs, tucking itself into the empty shells of barnacles or the discarded tubes of worms and mollusks. Basically any snug, hard-sided cavity it can claim as a home base. It spends much of its time peering out from that shelter, darting out to snatch passing zooplankton before retreating again. That behavior translates wonderfully into an aquarium setting, where you'll want to provide plenty of small caves, rubble, or even actual barnacle clusters to satisfy its strong instinct to hole up. Despite its small adult size, it has a lot of personality packed in, and watching it defend its chosen tube or pop in and out during feeding is genuinely entertaining. While listed here as a freshwater fish, this species is actually a saltwater marine fish from Pacific reef environments, so it needs full marine conditions rather than fresh or brackish water. Intermediate care experience is recommended.
