The Southern Sennet (Sphyraena picudilla) is a torpedo-shaped barracuda relative from the Western Atlantic, ranging from Bermuda and Florida down through the Bahamas all the way to Uruguay. In the wild it inhabits a surprisingly varied range of environments. Coastal rocky outcrops, coral reefs, and seagrass beds where juveniles tend to shelter, though it is most commonly associated with muddy bottom coastal zones. Adults and juveniles will mix together in the same schools, which can be large and often cruise near the surface, making this species a genuinely impressive sight in open water. In the aquarium it behaves as an active predator across all levels of the water column, and while it can be kept in groups that reflect its schooling nature, its appetite and energy level mean tankmates need to be chosen carefully. This is not a fish for small or modestly sized systems. The sheer swimming room required is substantial, and keepers need to be committed to feeding a dedicated carnivore over what can be a long lifespan. The Southern Sennet is best suited to experienced fishkeepers who have both the space and the infrastructure to manage a large, active, predatory schooling species responsibly.
