Circular Batfish

The circular batfish (Platax orbicularis) is one of those species that looks completely different at each stage of its life. Juveniles are tall, compressed, and brownish with a mottled pattern that convincingly mimics a drifting dead leaf. A clever survival trick they deploy in sheltered mangrove creeks and inner lagoons. As they mature, that disguise gives way to a rounder, more silvery disc-shaped body with faint banding, and adults move out to open sandy lagoons, reef channels, and seaward reefs across a huge range stretching from the Red Sea and East Africa through the Indo-Pacific to Japan and northern Australia. They turn up around deep shipwrecks too, which should tell you something about how adaptable they are. In the aquarium, new arrivals often hide and ignore food for the first few days, so patience during acclimation pays off. Once comfortable, they become genuinely interactive fish that recognize their keeper and come to the front of the tank readily. One thing to prepare for is the growth rate. A small juvenile can reach impressive proportions surprisingly fast, so having a very large system lined up before you buy is essential. They are also more susceptible to marine ich than many marines, so a proper quarantine period before any display introduction is a must.
