Royal Gramma

The royal gramma (Gramma loreto) is one of the most recognizable small fish in the saltwater hobby, split cleanly between a vivid purple-violet front half and a bright yellow rear. The two colors meeting in a blurred, almost painterly transition at the midpoint. In the wild it inhabits the rocky reefs and coral walls of the western Atlantic, from Bermuda and the Bahamas down through Central America to northern South America, where it spends most of its time hugging cave ceilings and the undersides of ledges. This means it routinely swims with its belly toward the rock surface, functionally upside down from our perspective, which is one of those behaviors that always gets a reaction from visitors at the tank. In nature it also picks ectoparasites off larger fish, giving it a mild cleaner role on the reef. In the aquarium it tends to be shy and retiring at first, claiming a favorite cave or crevice and darting back inside when startled, so giving it plenty of rockwork to hide in goes a long way toward settling it in. It is generally peaceful toward other species but can show territorial attitude toward its own kind or similar-looking fish, especially in tighter quarters. Captive breeding has been achieved, and the species does reasonably well in a dedicated reef setup with attentive care.
