The Brazilian basslet (Gramma brasiliensis) is a compact, cave-oriented reef fish found exclusively along the Brazilian coast, from mainland rocky shores out to both coastal and oceanic islands. It inhabits coral and rocky reef environments, tucking itself into small caves and beneath ledges where it often orients completely upside down, swimming along the ceiling as if gravity were optional. That behavior alone makes it one of the more immediately fascinating fish you can add to a reef or fish-only setup. In the wild it tends to be solitary or found in loose groups of a handful of individuals. Its diet is primarily planktonic, it picks food items out of the water column, and there are documented observations of it functioning as a cleaner fish, removing parasites from species like Chromis and grunts. In the aquarium it will readily accept meaty frozen foods and quality prepared diets. As a close relative of the well-known royal gramma, it shares a similar body plan and cave-hugging lifestyle, though it remains far less common in the hobby given its restricted Brazilian range. This species suits intermediate keepers who can provide a tank with plenty of caves, overhangs, and live rock structure to satisfy its natural preference for sheltered retreats.
