The Greenband Goby (Elacatinus multifasciatus) is a small but endlessly interesting fish from the Western Atlantic, ranging across the Bahamas, Central America, and down toward northern South America. In the wild it occupies a surprisingly specific niche. Pitted limestone faces, tide pools, and surf zones, where it shelters among the spines of rock-boring sea urchins. That relationship tells you a lot about what this fish values: tight hiding spots, live rock with texture and crevices, and a sense of security in the aquarium. At a maximum of around two inches, it can comfortably live out its life in a smaller reef setup, which makes it appealing for nano reef keepers who want something with genuine personality in a compact footprint. One of the more fascinating biological quirks of this species is that it is a protogynous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals begin life as females and can later transition to male. A trait shared with several of its close relatives. It has been bred in captivity, which is good news for the hobby and means tank-raised individuals are sometimes available. Intermediate care level is a fair call here, mostly because this fish needs a thoughtfully arranged tank with appropriate shelter and a carnivore diet rather than being particularly fragile.
