Chalk Bass

The chalk bass (Serranus tortugarum) is a small, personable serranid from the Western Atlantic, found from southern Florida and the Bahamas down through the Virgin Islands and much of the Caribbean. In the wild it tends to hover in loose groups just above rubble patches, sandy flats, or old shell debris rather than tucking into the reef itself, and it feeds on small planktonic prey drifting through the water column. That mid-water hovering habit translates well to aquarium life. You'll often see this fish hanging in the current, watching the room with obvious curiosity rather than retreating into a cave. The species is a simultaneous hermaphrodite, meaning individuals can function as both male and female at the same time, and pairs will regularly trade reproductive roles. A bit of natural history that makes them interesting to observe even in a smaller system. For a saltwater fish in the intermediate care bracket, the chalk bass is on the more forgiving end of that range, as long as it has some rock structure to explore and feel secure around. It generally gets along well with similarly sized, non-aggressive tankmates and poses no real threat to corals. At under three inches fully grown, it fits comfortably into modestly sized reef setups.
