The Crocodile Catfish (Bagarius suchus) is a large, powerfully built predator native to the Mekong and Chao Phraya river systems of Southeast Asia, where it haunts fast-moving rapids and the main channels of major rivers. The body is rough and almost armored in texture, with bead-like granular protuberances along the sides and a series of prominent ridges or humps running along the back in front of and behind the adipose fin. A feature more developed in this species than in its close relatives. Dark blotches and bands break up the body pattern in a way that suits an ambush predator sitting among rocks in turbulent water. The lower jaw carries an unusual set of teeth arranged in outer rows of small, closely packed cones and inner rows of fewer but much larger ones, a design clearly meant for gripping slippery fish prey. Despite being listed as beginner-level in some trade contexts, this species is genuinely not suited to the average home aquarium. It reaches a substantial adult size, insists on being kept alone, and requires the kind of large, well-oxygenated setup that very few private keepers can realistically provide. Breeding has never been documented in captivity. If you encounter juveniles in the trade, be honest with yourself about your long-term housing options before taking one home.
